Indian Medical eVisa Online Application Steps
For most countries, the electronic Medical Visa (e-Medical Visa) is the fastest option. It is applied for online and approved via email. Ensure you apply at least 7 to 10 days before your planned travel date to avoid processing delays.
You must complete your application on the official Government of India portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in. Avoid submitting your information to unauthorized agency websites that charge heavy service fees.
- Step 1: Share your passport data page with Medivizo. We obtain an official Medical Visa Invitation Letter from your host JCI hospital within 24 to 48 hours.
- Step 2: Visit the official portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) and select the e-Medical Visa option.
- Step 3: Fill in your personal details, passport details, and details of the treating hospital in India (provided in our invitation letter).
- Step 4: Upload a digital copy of your passport data page (PDF format) and a recent white-background photograph (JPEG format).
- Step 5: Upload the hospital invitation letter (PDF format) and pay the eVisa processing fee online.
- Step 6: Receive your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via email. Print this document and present it at immigration upon arrival.
Medical Attendant Visa (MX-Visa) Guidelines
Up to two medical attendants (family members, relatives, or friends) can accompany the patient to assist during their hospital stay and recovery. Attendants must apply under the e-Medical Attendant Visa (MX-Visa) category.
The MX-Visa application must be filled out simultaneously with the patient's visa. Attendants must upload the patient's passport details and the same hospital invitation letter, which lists their names as authorized companions.
e-Medical Visa vs. Traditional Physical Stamp Visa
Depending on your nationality or medical urgency, you can choose between the online e-Medical Visa or a traditional physical visa stamped at the nearest Indian Embassy.
| Visa Feature | e-Medical Visa (Online) | Traditional Stamp Visa (Embassy) |
|---|---|---|
| Processing Time | 3 to 5 business days | 7 to 15 business days |
| Embassy Visit | Not required (100% online) | Required for interview & biometrics |
| Validity Duration | 60 days from arrival | Up to 1 year |
| Entries Allowed | Triple Entry (re-enter twice) | Multiple Entry |

FRRO Registration & Local Extension Regulations
If your treatment requires hospitalization beyond the valid duration of your visa, extensions can be processed locally in India. This is managed online through the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) portal.
Medivizo coordinates with the treating hospital's international desk to issue a medical certificate stating the clinical reasons for the extension (e.g., transplant follow-ups or extended rehabilitation). We file the application with the FRRO, ensuring you remain legally compliant without leaving the country.
International Patient Desk
Medivizo coordinates local support: securing host hospital invitation letters required for embassy clearances, assisting in currency exchange, registering local SIMs, and handling FRRO visa extension filings.

Frequently Asked Clinical & Travel Questions
How long does it take to get an e-Medical Visa approved?
The online e-Medical Visa is typically processed and issued by immigration authorities within 3 to 5 business days. We recommend applying at least 10 days before your travel date.
Can a medical visa be extended locally in India?
Yes. If the treating consultant advises extended hospitalization or recovery monitoring, Medivizo coordinates with the hospital to file an extension request via the online FRRO portal.
Do companions need separate visa letters?
No. The host hospital issues a single consolidated Medical Visa Invitation Letter that lists the patient's details alongside the names and passport numbers of up to two attendants.
Can I travel to India on a tourist visa for surgery?
No. Traveling on a tourist visa for medical admissions is strictly prohibited by immigration regulations. Hospitals will not register patients for surgery without a valid e-Medical or physical Medical Visa.
What vaccinations are required before entering India?
Patients traveling from Yellow Fever endemic zones (such as parts of Africa and South America) must possess a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Card. Some countries also require oral polio vaccination certificates.
